Annual Report 2019
2. Summary of significant accounting policies (cont’d.) 2.10 Leases (cont’d.) Accounting policies applied until 31 December 2018 (cont’d.) Lessor Operating leases Assets leased out by the Group under operating leases are included in property, plant and equipment in the balance sheet. They are depreciated over their expected useful lives on a basis consistent with similar owned property, plant and equipment. Lease income (net of any incentives given to lessees) is recognised over the term of the lease on a straight-line basis. Accounting policies applied from 1 January 2019 The Group assesses at contract inception whether a contract is, or contains, a lease. That is, if the contract conveys the right to control the use of an identified asset for a period of time in exchange for consideration. Group as a lessee The Group applies a single recognition and measurement approach for all leases, except for short-term leases and leases of low-value assets. The Group recognises lease liabilities to make lease payments and ROU assets representing the right to use the underlying assets. i) ROU assets The Group recognises ROU assets at the commencement date of the lease (i.e., the date the underlying asset is available for use). ROU assets are measured at cost, less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses, and adjusted for any remeasurement of lease liabilities. The cost of ROU assets includes the amount of lease liabilities recognised, initial direct costs incurred, and lease payments made at or before the commencement date less any lease incentives received. ROU assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the shorter of the lease term and the estimated useful lives of the assets, as follows: Aircraft 2 – 15 years Land and building 2 – 20 years If ownership of the leased asset transfers to the Group at the end of the lease term or the cost reflects the exercise of a purchase option, depreciation is calculated using the estimated useful life of the asset. The ROU assets are also subject to impairment. Refer to the accounting policies in Note 2.8 impairment of non-financial assets.
